Description
The 6GW8 (American designation) or ECL86 (European designation) is a combined high-mu triode and output pentode housed in a single 9-pin noval envelope — a clever design that allows a complete single-channel amplifier stage to be built from just one valve.
Originally designed by Mullard and specifically intended for audio applications, the ECL86 was described in the original Mullard data sheet as “particularly suitable for stereophonic amplifiers.” Its sensitivity allows adequate output from low-sensitivity crystal and ceramic pickups. The triode section handles voltage amplification while the pentode section drives the output transformer and speaker load directly.
No longer in current production and becoming increasingly scarce, the ECL86/6GW8 is prized for its warm, musical character. It was used in a variety of European Hi-Fi integrated amplifiers and small guitar amplifiers, including the Marshall 1930. Compatible with PCL86 (different heater voltage — not directly interchangeable).
Stock is a mix of Australian-made Philips (Hendon SA) and other brands. Valves may ship in plain white boxes. Single valve — AMPLITREX AT1000 tested.
